Istanbul curator Vasif Kortun will discuss his use of the contemporary city as a tool to understand the work of contemporary artists. Since 2001, Kortun has explored this idea through a series of exhibitions including Becoming a Place [proje4L, Istanbul, 2001], Here [Platform Garanti, Istanbul. 2003], Istanbul [IFA, Stuttgart, 2004], and 9th Istanbul Biennial [2005]. These exhibitions have dealt with displacement and migration, the circulation of signs and systems, the redefinition of public and private realms, the transformation of urban spaces under neo-liberalism, and the impact of globalization on Istanbul.

Vasif Kortun is the internationally renowned Director of Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center in Istanbul. He was the Founding Director of Proje4L Istanbul Museum of Contemporary Art. From 1994 to 1997, he was Director of the Museum of the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College. Mr. Kortun has held advisory positions at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; e-flux, New York; Office for Contemporary Art, Norway; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the International Foundation Manifesta. He has also served as a jury member for the 5. Gwangju Biennial, 2004 and 50th Venice Biennale, 2003.
